The title poem of the book, Heart of a Caregiver, was actually written many years ago for a dear lady who cared for my grandmother. I was touched and inspired by her kind servant's heart, and I wanted to honor her and let her know how much I appreciated her. I didn't realize at the time that this poem would play a significant part in opening a door for me to be a writer for Simple Truths.
When I first submitted some of my poems to Mac Anderson for his consideration, I received a phone call from him. We talked about several pieces I had sent, including Heart of a Caregiver, and he asked if I could write a poem for teachers entitled Heart of a Teacher. Heart of a Caregiver autographed edition

I was thrilled! Heart of a Teacher eventually became my first book, and now things have come full circle as I've had the privilege of writing the book, Heart of a Caregiver, as a tribute to Caregivers everywhere.
When I wrote Heart of a Teacher, it was easy for me to draw upon my own experiences as a teacher to create real life stories and poems. But when I began working on Heart of a Caregiver I knew it would be much more difficult, as I had very limited experience with Caregiving and hospitals. I have never been very good at dealing with other people's pain, so I have a great deal of admiration for people who choose this as their life's work.
Years ago, I had occasionally helped with the care of my grandmother, both in her own home and later in a nursing home. My mother-in-law also required care at one point and lived with us for about nine months when she was ill. I learned two things from those experiences. First...Caregiving is not my forte, and second...it's a really tough job!
I knew I needed to do more research, so I began reading everything I could find on the subject. Interestingly, over the following months, God gave me many opportunities to observe and learn about Caregivers first hand...I experienced several trips to the emergency room with both my mother and my husband, and had surgery myself as well.
I was also invited to teach an inspirational class for nurses at one of our local hospitals on The Language of Caring. The purpose of the class was to affirm and encourage nurses by reminding them of the many ways they touch lives with their Caring Hearts. It gave me the chance to interact with many healthcare personnel and get their input and stories (many of which are included in the book).
The most significant insight came from my daughter-in-law, Hannah, who is an RN. We had many discussions in which she shared her heart with me about why she chose nursing as a career, what qualities she felt were important, and how she handled some of the more difficult and painful aspects of her job (things I could not possibly do). As she told me many of her own stories, I could sense her passion for nursing and her deep desire to help others. She modeled for me what this special Heart of a Caregiver book is all about. And she was instrumental in helping to choose items for the book that would touch the hearts of nurses.
The process of writing this book helped me to gain even more respect for those who choose to work in this field (as well as those who find themselves in a Caregiving role out of necessity). I began to understand the kind of heart required to deal with pain and death on a daily basis, and it became important to me to clearly convey how very special and unique these individuals are.
Caregivers choose to get involved and do what others cannot do, even if it's difficult...even if they might get hurt in the process. They possess real courage and strength and are true "heroes" in our society.
Today, I'd like to share the title poem from the book Heart of a Caregiver:
An excerpt from
Heart of a Caregiver
by Paula J. Fox In the world of pain and suffering,
true heroes can be found...
providing special comfort and relief.
They choose to make a difference,
regardless of the cost...
always willing to help others in their grief.
It's hard to persevere at times
A Caregiver's job is tough!
It takes extra strength and courage to get through.
But God designed a HEART for them
to handle every challenge...
so they can DO what others cannot do.
He made this HEART much STRONGER
just to handle all the weight...
of the many heavy burdens it must bear.
And HE covered it with SOFTNESS
to help cushion all the hurt...
with Empathy and tender loving Care.
He also made it FLEXIBLE
to bend but not to break...
when things don't always go the way they're planned.
And it had to be SELF-HEALING
when hurtful things are said...
by those who just don't seem to understand.
He gave it more RESILIENCE
to bounce back and not get crushed...
when disappointment battles against hope.
And He knew a SENSE OF HUMOR
would be needed every day...
to give laughter and prove the strength to cope.
He made it with a battery
that never does run down...
for a Caregiver's day will never end.
It just keeps going...and keeps going,
always one more thing to do...
with another crisis just around the bend.
And of course, this HEART's an upgrade
in so many other ways...
He made it Kinder... more Unselfish than the rest.
With more Patience...and Compassion
and a Love that never ends.
Compared to all the others...it's the BEST!
